Research have shown that the German surname Ströh is ultimately of occupational origin.  As such the name may find its roots in the age-old profession of farming as the term “ströh” was, during the Middle Ages, synonymous with “bauer” i.e. “farmer”.  The logic behind this practice becomes clear when we realize that “ströh” both in the Middle Ages and today means “straw” in English.  During the Middle Ages society was clearly segmented into the ruling and serving classes with little room for entrepreneurial independence.  To own one’s own land therefore in the tradition of the Meyer was a great accomplishment and was more likely resultant of some loyal deed or general good service by a palace official to his lord.
